The Hawaiʻi Wildlife Discovery Center is a nonprofit, multi-media venue featuring a dynamic blend of art and science celebrating Hawaiʻi’s marine life and showcasing the work of Hawaiʻi Wildlife Fund. It is a completely renovated 5,000 sq ft. space with 30-plus exhibits about Hawaiʻi’s undersea life, whaling era, cultural values, and conservation, including the Will Naylor Smith Discovery Experience, one of the highlights of the Discovery Center. This immersive film is six-minutes screened floor to ceiling on 3 walls with only the sounds from ocean wildlife and waves rushing to shore.
In addition to an interactive Kidʻs Zone where kids of all ages can make art with marine debris, there is another video room featuring an 82-inch screen using an interactive kiosk. Hamline University in Saint Paul, Minn., known for its success with experiential learning and innovative, hands-on technology, curated the multimedia stories. There are 45 locally produced, Maui-focused videos with topics ranging from “Voice of the Sea” to “Kumukahi: Stories of Living Hawaiian Culture” and “What Does it Take to Disentangle a Whale?”. There is another exhibit hall focused on marine debris art made from plastics recovered from the famous “Plastic Island” of the North Pacific, including a musical, stop-action video, murals, paintings and stunning photographs.
HWDC was created in partnership with Hawaiʻi Wildlife Fund, Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, and Whalers Village.

“The stars aligned and I happened to be at Whalers Village on opening day of the Hawaiʻi Wildlife Discovery Center! It was absolute TREAT! Anthony showed us around the entire museum and he was such a joy to talk to. The projector room is so special, it makes you feel like you are diving in the ocean! I learned so much about Hawaiʻi’s flora and fauna and beautiful culture. This museum is a dream and everyone should visit! It will teach you things that will make you appreciate the beautiful Hawaiian islands even more than before and will inspire you to help protect it!”
